Taiwan industry thinks highly of the mainland's WLAN market. Big companies like BenQ, D-Link and CyberTAN have expressed support toward the mainland's newly enacted WLAN security standard - WAPI and is getting ready to put their products into the mainland market.

According to the local media China's mainland put forward the WAPI standard at the end of last year requiring that all WLAN equipment exports to China's mainland or to be sold in China's mainland must comply with the security standard. The new policy is to take effect from June 1 this year. Businessmen on the island believe that though currently the mainland's WLAN market is only about US$50 billion in scale it has huge potential. It is estimated that the market will grow to US$500 billion by 2007 and become the largest WLAN market in the world.

Taiwan businessmen have declared their support of WAPI. A concerned official at BenQ said recently it has begun negotiation with the Chinese companies on patent licensing. If the authentication process goes on smoothly it can put forward computer products that comply with the WAPI authentication standard this month at the earliest.
