US not to benefit from interfering with HK affairsHong Kong newspapers lashed out Thursday at an annual report of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC) to the US congress on June 15, condemning its interference with China's internal affairs. The USCC report claimed that China's recent actions toward Hong Kong Special Administrative Region "call into questions its commitments to preserving Hong Kong's autonomy and self-government" and urged the US congress and administration to conduct a fresh assessment of the one China policy and "redress unfair Chinese trade practices." Leading newspapers, in their commentators' articles and editorials, condemned the USCC report's interference with China's internal affairs, saying that the act violated the basic principles of the international law and would do no good to Hong Kong and the United States. Wen Wei Po said in its editorial that the Chinese government's sincerity for implementing the "One Country, Two Systems" policy is well known to the world. The Basic Law stipulates that the central authorities have the decisive power for determining the process of Hong Kong's constitutional development. And the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee's decisions on Hong Kong's constitutional development, with authorized power entrusted by the Constitution and Basic Law, do not affect Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy. The editorial said, taking self interest as the starting point, the United States has been constantly interfering with Hong Kong's affairs and attempting to use Hong Kong issue to affect the Sino-US relations. The article said, in Hong Kong, some so called "democrats" echoed with some politicians in the United States and even went to the United States to provide so-called "evidence" for US attacking on Hong Kong's political development process. The internationalization of Hong Kong issue will by no means in the interest of the Hong Kong people, the article stressed. Ta Kung Pao said in its editorial, "Though some US politicians often keep high-profile in their talks, they may not understand the Basic Law nor the interpretation right of the NPC Standing Committee." The so called "Hong Kong issue" is merely a piece in a board game for the United States in handling its relations with China, which is often used by some US politicians to attack China, it noted. The article called on Hong Kong people to stand with the 1.3 billion people of the motherland and strike back the move of the US politicians. In a commentary Singtao Daily said that with the approaching of the US presidential elections, some politicians may attempt to canvass votes by claiming that they are helping Hong Kong people "in obtaining democracy." At this sensitive period, Hong Kong people should better keep alert and not be used by them. Other Hong Kong newspapers said that the gradual and orderly launch of Hong Kong's constitutional development and maintaining the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong are in accordance with the interests of Western countries including the United States. If Hong Kong does not stick to the Basic Law and practices rash universal suffrage, social turmoil would appear in Hong Kong and good business environment will be damaged. The interests of foreign investors, including those from the United States, will be damaged, the editorials said. The articles said that any people who really care about Hong Kong should support the Chinese government in its efforts to maintain Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability. |
