Taiwan pop singer's Beijing concert to go ahead as scheduled

Chang Hui-mei, pop singer of Taiwan, will hold her concert in Beijing on July 31 as scheduled, said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Wednesday in Beijing.

"We have been advocating the vigorous development of cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Straits to beef up ties among the compatriots on both sides," Li said at a regular press conference.

"The compatriots on both sides have the same ancestral and cultural origins. To promote cross-Straits cultural exchanges and carry forward the Chinese culture are our common aspirations," he said.

For years, artistic performers from both sides have done a great deal of work for cross-Straits cultural exchanges, Li said. "We consistently support and welcome such efforts."

Taiwan financial expert works in mainland purely for professional reason
Taiwanese financial expert Linin Day's membership in the International Advisory Council (IAC) under the mainland's securities watchdog is a matter of pure professional exchange, said the spokesman.

The political connotations attached to the affair by some parties in Taiwan are confusing, Li said.

Answering a question raised by a reporter from Taiwan, Li explained the IAC of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) is a non-decision-making advisory body. It holds one or two conferences each year to solicit suggestions and opinions on the development of capital and securities markets of the mainland.

Linin Day's membership will facilitate the exchanges and cooperation of securities business and capital market on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, Li said.

Linin Day used to work as a securities regulator and finance official with the Taiwan authorities, which ban retired officials to be employed by official organs of the mainland.
