China will rely on progress in engineering technology to achieve new industrialization and sustainable development, and the nation should embark on green manufacturing for the growth of engineeing technology.
Xu Kuangdi, president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made the remarks at the 2004 World Engineers' Convention which opened in Shanghai Wednesday.
Xu said that progress in engineering technology should not be achieved through high consumption of resources and energy and environmental pollution.
According to Xu, green manufacturing means clean production, orenvironmentally-conscious manufacturing. To develop green manufacturing will help to utilize resources in a reasonable manner and mitigate damage to the ecological environment, Xu added.
Green manufacturing minimizes waste and pollution and makes use of wastes to churn out products in need. The technology for green manufacturing is of great importance for oil refining, chemical, steel and nonferrous metal sectors.
Xu pointed out that engineering technology should play an active role in efficient use of resources and protection of the environment.
Xu said that China is promoting green manufacturing and clean production. A large group of steel enterprises have participated in the process.
China's modernization drive, especially the development of green manufacturing, is providing a huge arena for engineers both at home and from abroad, Xu added.
Entrusted by the World Federation of Engineering Organization, the four-day world engineers' convention is jointly sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Municipal Government of Shangshai.
