Some 10,000 Americans evacuated from Lebanon

About 10,000 Americans have been evacuated from Lebanon since the evacuation operation began last Sunday after Israel launched attacks against the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, the U.S. State Department said on Saturday.

The government has used warships, helicopters and chartered commercial vessels to transport American nationals from Lebanon to Cyprus and Turkey, and about 2,000 of them have already returned to the United States, it said in a statement.

There were about 25,000 Americans in Lebanon before the violence flared up.
