The Japanese government has decided to provide emergency assistance totaling about 4.8 million U.S. dollars in an bid to help improve Nepal's humanitarian situation and boost the country's peace-building, the National News Agency, RSS reported on Saturday.
According to the RSS, of the assistance, about 4.4 million dollars will go to the United Nations Children's Fund and about 400,000 dollars to the United Nations Population Fund in response to the UN Common Appeal for Transition Support.
Since a peace accord was reached and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) started to disarm themselves, this assistance is to be extended from the need for emergency measures to be taken for children who have been involved in the internal conflict that had lasted for about 11 years and for women who have been suffering from the very poor medical services, the report said.
Besides the emergency assistance, Japan has extended assistance for an election to the Constituent Assembly which is supposed to be held by mid-June, including assistance to purchase 60,000 ballot boxes needed for the election.
In addition, recently Japan also has provided grant assistance for Increase of Food Production (about 2.5 million dollars) and Food Aid (2.6 million dollars) to Nepal.
