A chain of traffic accidents have left 11 dead and 28 others injured on Sunday at an expressway in east China's Anhui Province, according to local firemen.
More than 40 accidents occurred early Sunday on the Wuhu-Xuancheng expressway, said Yu Jing, a fire-woman of the Wuhu city fire brigade, citing low visibility caused by foggy weather as a major factor leading to the accidents.
"Even two people sit face to face, they can hardly recognize each other," said Yu.
She told Xinhua that the accidents didn't occur at the same time, but within nine hours before 8 a.m. Sunday, and the accident site is very close to the urban area of Xuancheng.
Duan Guofang, a staffer on duty at the Xuancheng first-aid center said that 11 people were confirmed dead and 28 injured, seven of them seriously, and had been sent to hospital. The condition of the seven seriously injured people was described as not stable by far.
The expressway reopened to traffic at 10:50 a.m. and further investigation is underway. Source:Xinhua
