A Tamil political leader in India's Tamil Nadu state has warned the government against eruption of violence if New Delhi does not stop Sri Lankan government from halting its military offensive against the Tamil Tiger rebels, according to Indian daily The Hindu on Thursday.
V. Gopalswarmy alias Vaiko, the leader of the MDMK party in Tamil Nadu, told a rally Wednesday that Tamil Nadu would witness a bloodbath even if the slightest harm befell Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader V. Prabakaran, according to the newspaper report.
Vaiko also said that the mind of the people of Tamil Nadu had reached the point of "volcano" and the Tamil youth in India could join their brothers Sri Lanka to fight government forces.
"If the Argentine-born Che Guevara could fight for the Cubans, why not the youth from Tamil Nadu for the Tamils of Sri Lanka, with whom they have an umbilical cord relationship," he said.
Tamil Nadu's political parties have declared a common platform Thursday asking the Indian government to pressure Colombo to halt its military offensive against the LTTE.
The Hindu also quoted Indian intelligence sources as saying that LTTE could unleash violence in India during the general elections to begin in a week's time to pressure India to ask Sri Lankan government stop the offensive against it.
The Sri Lankan government forces have been driving the LTTE rebels to the brink of the sea in its offensive over the past several months.
While tacitly regarding LTTE as a terrorist group, the Indian government has refused to intervene in Sri Lanka's civil war and regards it as a purely internal affair of the neighboring island nation.
But India has asked Colombo to allow tens of thousands of Tamil civilians to evacuate to safe zones from the LTTE-controlled area.
