Canada on Monday announced that it has listed the World Tamil Movement (WTM) as a terrorist organization, which it said is involved with Sri Lanka's rebel Tamil Tigers.
The WTM is the leading front organization for the Tamil Tigers in Canada, and has been involved in raising funds to support the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of Sri Lanka, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said in Toronto.
"We have to send a clear message that we do not condone this type of activity. We're partnering with other people and agencies to make sure that a group like this is not able to raise funds," he told a press conference.
The government will seize the WTM's assets and that it will be illegal for Canadians to help the group, including offering financial assistance, he said.
Canada listed the LTTE as a terrorist organization in 2006.
According to an article on the Public Safety Department's website, WTM was created in 1986 and transfers funds to bank accounts in Sri Lanka meant for the LTTE.
The LTTE rebels have been fighting for an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the tiny island of Sri Lanka since the early 1980s. More than 60,000 people have died in the conflicts.
