French search planes have not found any more debris from Flight 447, which crashed into the Atlantic with 228 people onboard, a senior military official said on Thursday.

Four planes, including an AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft from the Dakar French air base, took part in locating the Air France passenger jet, said Christophe Prazuck, an official with the French Chief of Staff.

The search team spotted some metallic objects, which turned out not to belong to the plane, he said.

Air France on Wednesday told families of passengers on Flight 447 that the airliner disintegrated either in the air or when it crashed into the ocean and there were no survivors.

Some debris, including a seven-meter-long chunk and 10 other objects, was found by Brazilian planes over a wide area, but pilots had not spotted any sign of survivors, the Brazilian Air Force said.

The overall zone is roughly 640 km northeast of the Fernando deNoronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.

Investigators are working with Air France, Airbus and meteorologists to determine what caused the Airbus A330-200 with 216 passengers and 12 crew members to slam into the Atlantic Ocean after leaving Rio de Janeiro for Paris on Sunday night.
