China and Brazil will further promote the diversified trade and bilateral economic and trade cooperation, said the joint communique issued by the two countries on May 19 during Brazil President Lula da Silva's visit to China. . China and Brazil also showed will to strengthen dialogues on macro-economy policies within the mechanism of bilateral financial ministers' dialogue. They also called on international financial organizations to offer more resource aid to developing countries hit more severely by the global slump.
As to the G20 London Summit, Lula and Hu underscored its significance in tackling crisis, calling on the international community to implement the consensus reached during the summit and promote the international financial system reform.
According to the communique, the two countries opposed protectionism as a means to survive the crisis. They expected to enhance coordination and cooperation within the World Trade Organization and promote an early conclusion of Doha Round negotiation.
"I believe Brazil and China are consolidating their strategic partnership (established in 1993), which is reflected in bilateral trade. I also believe the current status is just 10 percent of the potential," Lula said when he met Premier Wen Jiabao earlier on May 19.
In April 2009, China replaced the United States as Brazil's top trade partner. In April, trade turnover between Brazil and China reached $3.2 billion, compared with $2.8 billion with the United States.
